Final Reflection

As we come to the end of the semester and the end of this module, my understanding of the value of effective communication skills remains unchanged. To me, developing effective communication skills is always important as one is constantly meeting new people and having to communicate to them. By making the effort to upgrade and improve one’s skills in communication, we will be able to better convey messages to people around us and thus achieve more meaningful and happier relationships.

To be honest, I bided for this module initially as it has no exams and I could use my programme points to bid for it (I was using the points in my general account to bid for Natural Heritage!). Although I love to read, I was always intimidated and daunted by the task of writing as I feel that languages in general is a form of art – something that I would like to appreciate and admire but not create. Other than my own diary which I have kept since I was young, I never liked writing in school as I felt that the grading of our work is rather subjective and sometimes depends on the liking of our teachers. For that reason, I have always avoided modules that involve tons of writing in the university (where we had more freedom in choosing the things we learn), and stuck close to things I felt safe with, such as mathematics and science, which are more certain and definite. That is why I am doing engineering!

However, after taking this module (albeit being attracted by the wrong reasons initially), I have gained so much confidence in myself when it comes to writing, be it for formal cases such as reports, business letters, job application letters and email correspondences, or less formal situations such as blog posts. (:

From the whole experience of constructing our survey all the way to our presentation for our research project, I have learnt so much; I am now able to hold group project meetings efficiently and productively by following an agenda and also follow-up easily through the use of notes of meeting. As this was taught at the start of the semester, I was able to transfer the use of these skills to four of my other projects for this semester, which I benefited greatly from and saved me a lot of time. Being an engineering student, I was used to churning out lab reports for the numerous experiments we had to conduct since the start of Year Two. However, I was amazed by how much I learned from the formal report writing as there was so much more requirements to it. Initially, I liked the fact that there was a fixed structure for writing the formal report, which was so much less ambiguous than the lab reports and papers that I usually have to write. But I have to admit that the whole process was quite taxing as Dinidu and I had to stay up the entire night to write our findings and recommendations while trying to be coherent! (Yes we know it is our own fault for being so last minute!!) It all ended with the presentation, which I thought went alright but am starting to have second thoughts after reading the comments on my individual performance. -Cringes =X

I felt that the resume and interview skills were the most important takeaways from the module since these were the practical skills that could determine our future. Ultimately I have learnt that any interview takes with it a huge slice of luck, so it is best not to read too much into all the rejections but focus on the positives from all the interviews.

All in all, I am grateful for being in Brad’s class along with all my lovely classmates (yes I really think each and everyone of you is lovely!) as I am sure everyone has in one way or another, contributed to my learning and made this whole experience such an enjoyable one. Without any of you, the interactions in class or in our whole blogging arena would have been entirely different and incomplete. Thank you all for such a wonderful time, and thank you Brad, for the patience and guidance that you have shown us.

  1. Dear Wan Yu,

I think that I can safely say that I represent the rest in class by saying that you are lovely too! :) And I do agree that everyone (with their own unique and different characters) definitely caused the weekly four hours lessons to be fun and enjoyable. All the best in your future and thanks for everything in class. :)

  2. Hi Wan Yu,

I do hope that I have given you lots of positives for the interview. I don't think interviewers out there are that nasty. :P

I agree with you that being Science and Engineering students, we seldom have the chance to write essays and get assessed based on our language. However, I think writing is an unavoidable part of our life and we should fully utilize all the opportunities we have in school to develop our writing styles.

It has been fun learning with you. All the best.

    Cheers
    Duane

  3. Hi Wan Yu,

I won’t deny that we all have different and unique characteristics. I guess that add colors and spice up to the class. And one think unique about this class, is the bond that we all managed to form at the end of the semester. I appreciate meeting all of you guys in this class. I guess there isn’t any other class for substitute. Would like to wish you all the best in your exams and stay cheerful always.

  5. Hey Wan Yu,

This module indeed has made us learn many things with relations to communications. Apart from that, the friendships we have built in this class is something that any other module has failed to do so. It was a wonderful wonderful experience working with you as a blogging buddy, a group mate & most importantly as a really really close friend. Please do keep in touch. All the best for your future.

  6. Hi Wan Yu,

I think you hold a special place in the heart of every one of us, because you never fail to brighten up the atmosphere every lesson:) Even your comment on my blog put a smile to my face.

I was a little anxious about the module intially too, because I'm more of a fact-based learner and essay writing was never my forte. But as we forge close bonds along the way, I realised I didn't regret taking this module at all. Thank you for the smiles you always put on our faces during every prof comm lesson.

  7. Hello Receptionist, thank you for such a wonderful time too. (: I think it is fantastic that you are applying what you have learnt in this module to your other modules! The university would be so glad to hear this! Personally I've also applied what I have learnt here for my marketing and gem 2901 reports. Its been very helpful. I just hope the 3 months break wouldn't wash away what we've learnt! By the way, you did well for the interview, I'm sure you'll be able to get the job you desire in the future. (:

  8. Lovely. The lovely freakydoll.

    Dear Wan Yu,

Thank you for this detailed reflection. I really appreciate the wholehearted effort you made this term. I also appreciate the way you brought a shine to our class. From the moment you would waltz into the room (quite often late...but better late than never) with a big smile on your face to the often unexpected and yet undoubtedly insightful comments, you were...how to say it....CHARMING. There is a certain effervescence about you, which only confirms what you wrote in your biodata post about engineering not necessarily being the best avenue for you to channel your energies.

You communicate well, Wan Yu. I sincerely hope that this term and this course have helped you in some small way to add one more ray of sunshine to your "presentation" gleam, be that verbal, nonverbal,
    intercultural, business-like, whatever.

Best of luck, too, in all your endeavors! Keep us informed!

  9. Wan Yu!!!

I can tell you honestly, that I was drawn to you immediately when you entered the classroom. I like beautiful things and sincerely I thought you were really pretty. I even went back to hall to tell my friends that I have a pretty module-mate.

I am glad to have gotten to know you better through doing the project. Although there were times when we disagreed, I enjoyed your company and your cheer-i-ness. :)

All the best, girl! We'll meet up soon at the outing!

  10. Hey wanyu,
I agree with Sarah that you are really pretty! Thank you for everything that you have brought to our class, be it the joy, the random funny comments and yur cheerfulness.

It has been a pleasure having to work with you during lesson time, and all the best in all your endeavors!

Oh and I must add, don't worry I think that you did excellant in your oral presentation, just that we have to give our most critical comments to help push each other to the best! So don't feel sore about it! Like what I said, your appearance has already won half of the audiences' heart before you start=)
